Una ricostruzione alternativa del cranio di Masiakasaurus

Ispirato da questo commento di M. Mortimer relativo alla ricostruzione scheletrica del cranio di Masiakasaurus realizzata da M. Loewen presente nel recente studio su questo taxon (Carrano et al., 2011), ho realizzato una mia interpretazione basata sulle ossa note, assemblando le varie norme laterali (tranne il quadrato che è in norma mediale) opportunamente ri-scalate.
Noterete che rispetto alla ricostruzione di Loewen, questa si differenzia sopratutto per un muso più basso e di profilo triangolare. L'unica incertezza sulla plausibilità della ricostruzione è nella zona occipitale, che probabilmente appartiene ad un esemplare più grande rispetto agli altri utilizzati, e forse risulta sovradimensionata.

  3. Guess that saves me the problem of doing it. However, given that the premaxilla only preserves the first two alveoli, I would think a larger posterior section of it is missing. Also would be nice to place the posterior mandibular elements in there. And yeah, the braincase does seem rather large in your pic.

  4. Yes, the missing posterior end of premaxilla would be longer.
    The pic is preliminary and a second version (including posterior mandibular elements) is needed.

  5. I adapted my version from the premise that, to some degree, the rostral dentition and jaws would parallel one another. The up-curved snout from Carrano et al. is about as hypothetical given the material. The straight, rather than ventrally convex, maxillary dentigerous margin (along with Noasaurus's ventrally concave maxillary margin) implies a moderate de-curve, although maybe I exaggerate it too much.
